Roatán Cruise Port Beach Day: Mahogany Bay, West Bay or a Private Island?
Your ship is in Roatán for six or seven hours, and most of that is beach time. The real question is which beach: the one a few steps from the ship, the famous one everybody heads to, or a small private cay where the only people on the sand are the ones who booked. Here is how the three compare, what each one costs you in travel time, and how you get back on board with hours to spare.
First, do the math on your day
Look at your all-aboard time, not your sailing time — they are usually 30 minutes apart. A typical Roatán call docks around 8 or 9 in the morning with all aboard in the middle of the afternoon. Take off the time it takes to clear the terminal at the start, and the safety margin you want at the end, and what is left is your actual beach time: normally five to six hours.
That is plenty for a beach 25 minutes away. It is not plenty for the far east end of the island. Independent operators here work to a simple rule: you should be back at the terminal gates 1.5 to 2 hours before the ship sails. Any plan that does not leave that cushion is the wrong plan, no matter how good the beach is.
Option 1 — The beach at the port
Mahogany Bay has its own beach a short walk or chairlift ride from the ship, and the Port of Roatán in Coxen Hole is a shopping village with taxis waiting outside. The advantage is obvious: zero travel time, and the ship is in sight all day.
The trade-off is just as obvious. Everyone from your ship — and from any other ship in port that day — is on the same strip of sand, at the same time, with the same idea. If you want a quiet beach, this is not it.
Option 2 — West Bay Beach
West Bay is the postcard: white sand, calm turquoise water and a reef close enough to swim to. It is 30 to 45 minutes from either port, and there are beach clubs, restaurants and chair rentals all along it. If it is your first time in Roatán and you want to see the beach everyone photographs, go.
Know what you are walking into, though. On a two- or three-ship day West Bay is the busiest place on the island: chairs packed together, vendors walking the sand and a queue for everything. Our cruise port transfer guide explains how the ride from the ship works and what it should cost you in time.
Option 3 — A private cay
The third option is the one most cruise passengers never hear about: leave the main island altogether. Brady's Cay is a small, family-run cay that has been welcoming visitors since 1977, about 20 to 35 minutes from the port by van and then a five-minute boat ride across.
It is guest-only. Nobody is there except the people who booked, so there are no vendors and no fight for a chair. You get a lounger, a hammock or an umbrella for the day, thatched palapas for shade, swings out in the shallow water, and a restaurant and beach bar on the island. The water is calm and shallow close in, which is why it works so well with small children. Guided snorkeling, kayaks, paddleboards, a jet ski, a massage or the monkey and sloth encounter can be added once you are there.
| Beach at the port | West Bay | Private cay | |

| Best for | Staying close to the ship | Seeing the famous beach | A quiet day, families, repeat visitors |
How the private island day works, step by step
- Off the ship. At Mahogany Bay you walk out to the street exit; at Coxen Hole you head to the port kiosk, where the team checks you in.
- The drive. A marked van takes you to the mainland dock — 20 to 35 minutes, depending on which port you are in and the traffic that morning.
- The crossing. A five-minute boat ride from the dock to the island own pier. That short hop is what keeps the cay quiet.
- The day. Pick your spot, order lunch when you are hungry, swim, snorkel, or do nothing at all.
- The way back. Boats leave the island every hour through the afternoon, so you choose the one that fits your all-aboard time.

Getting back to your ship on time
This is the part that keeps people from booking anything outside the ship, so let us be specific. Departures to the island run through the morning, returns run hourly through the afternoon, and the whole schedule is built backwards from your all-aboard time so you are at the terminal gates 1.5 to 2 hours before sailing.
If your ship docks late, the transfer times move with it — port schedules are watched all morning. And because everything is arranged over WhatsApp, you are talking to a person who knows where your group is, not to a desk you have to walk back to.
What to bring
- Your ship card and a photo ID.
- Sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses — shade is there, but the Caribbean sun is not gentle.
- A card or some cash for food and drinks on the island.
- Water shoes if you like to walk in around the rocks, and your own snorkel mask if you have one.
- A towel from your cabin, if your ship allows it.
Who this is for — and who should skip it
Book it if you are travelling with small children and want calm, shallow water; you want a quiet day instead of a crowded one; or you have already done West Bay on a previous cruise and want to see something else.
Skip it if your plan is to shop at the port, if you would rather stay within walking distance of the ship, or if you have already bought a ship-sponsored excursion for the same hours.
